Segregasi Sosial dan Trauma Kolektif Pascakonflik Etnis: Studi Kasus Masyarakat Melayu Sambas, Kalimantan Barat
Emita Gunawan, Nasiwan Nasiwan
Abstract
The 1999 ethnic conflict between the Malay and Madurese communities in Sambas Regency, West Kalimantan, has generated long-term social consequences that continue to influence interethnic relations in post-conflict society. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of social segregation and diversity in the Malay community of Sambas, with particular attention to how collective trauma shapes post-conflict social interaction and citizenship practices. Employing a qualitative research approach, data were collected through literature review, field observations, and in-depth interviews with members of both older and younger generations within the Malay community. The findings reveal that collective trauma experienced by the older generation plays a significant role in maintaining social boundaries and residential segregation as a protective mechanism in post-conflict settings. Meanwhile, the younger generation demonstrates relatively greater openness toward interethnic interaction, although certain social boundaries remain respected as part of communal norms. These dynamics indicate that post-conflict diversity in Sambas is negotiated through a balance between caution and coexistence, rather than through full social integration. The study concludes that social segregation in Sambas should be understood not solely as ethnic prejudice, but as an adaptive response shaped by collective trauma and post-conflict social experience. These findings highlight the importance of Civic and Pancasila Education in fostering critical civic awareness to support social reconciliation and strengthen diversity in post-conflict societies.
