A Plastic Waste-Based Urban Farming Community Service Program in Patangpuluhan
Abstract
Household plastic waste and limited space for food production are major challenges for urban communities, including in Patangpuluhan Urban Village, Wirobrajan Subdistrict, Yogyakarta City, where plastic waste such as used mineral-water gallons is still commonly regarded as worthless while narrow yards remain underused for household food cultivation. Most existing urban farming initiatives focus mainly on plant-production techniques and have not yet widely integrated household plastic-waste reduction as both a growing-media source and an environmental behavior-change strategy, so this community service program aimed to (1) improve participants’ knowledge of plastic waste, urban farming, and the circular economy, (2) build participants’ skills in converting used plastic gallons into planting media, and (3) develop an initial Green Food Cycle approach that integrates waste management, household food production, and community learning. The program was conducted on 28 June 2026 in Patangpuluhan Urban Village, Wirobrajan Subdistrict, Yogyakarta City, using a participatory empowerment approach involving 25 members of a neighborhood women’s group (dasa wisma) through problem identification, environmental education, plastic-waste-utilization training, and planting-media practice, with data analyzed using descriptive quantitative and qualitative methods. The results showed increases in participants’ knowledge of plastic-waste impacts from 56% to 88% (a 32-percentage-point gain), urban farming from 48% to 84% (a 36-percentage-point gain), and the circular economy from 44% to 80% (a 36-percentage-point gain), and 21 of 25 participants were able to independently produce planting media from used plastic gallons. These findings indicate that transforming plastic waste through urban farming shows potential as an initial community empowerment approach that supports urban environmental awareness, although its sustainability and its effect on household food security require further monitoring
Program Layanan Masyarakat Pertanian Perkotaan Berbasis Limbah Plastik di Patangpuluhan
ABSTRAK
Limbah plastik rumah tangga dan keterbatasan ruang untuk produksi pangan menjadi tantangan bagi masyarakat perkotaan, termasuk di Kelurahan Patangpuluhan, Kecamatan Wirobrajan, Kota Yogyakarta, tempat limbah plastik seperti galon air mineral bekas masih dominan dipandang sebagai barang tidak bernilai, sementara pemanfaatan pekarangan sempit untuk bercocok tanam belum berkembang. Sebagian besar program urban farming yang telah berjalan masih berfokus pada teknik produksi tanaman dan belum banyak mengintegrasikan pengurangan limbah plastik rumah tangga sebagai sumber material sekaligus strategi perubahan perilaku lingkungan, sehingga kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk (1) meningkatkan pengetahuan peserta mengenai limbah plastik, urban farming, dan circular economy, (2) meningkatkan keterampilan peserta dalam membuat media tanam dari galon plastik bekas, dan (3) menyusun kerangka pemberdayaan yang mengintegrasikan pengelolaan limbah, produksi pangan rumah tangga, dan pembelajaran komunitas. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada 28 Juni 2026 di Kelurahan Patangpuluhan, Kecamatan Wirobrajan, Kota Yogyakarta, menggunakan pendekatan pemberdayaan partisipatif yang melibatkan 25 anggota dasa wisma melalui tahapan identifikasi masalah, edukasi lingkungan, pelatihan pemanfaatan limbah plastik, dan praktik pembuatan media tanam, dengan data dianalisis secara deskriptif kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pengetahuan peserta pada aspek dampak limbah plastik dari 56% menjadi 88% (naik 32 poin persentase), pengetahuan urban farming dari 48% menjadi 84% (naik 36 poin persentase), dan pemahaman circular economy dari 44% menjadi 80% (naik 36 poin persentase), serta sebanyak 21 dari 25 peserta mampu membuat media tanam berbasis galon plastik secara mandiri. Program ini mengindikasikan bahwa pemanfaatan limbah plastik melalui urban farming berpotensi menjadi pendekatan pemberdayaan masyarakat tahap awal yang mendukung kesadaran lingkungan perkotaan, meskipun keberlanjutan dan dampaknya terhadap ketahanan pangan rumah tangga masih memerlukan pemantauan lanjutan
